The first evidence for female‐biased migration in a partially migratory stream‐dwelling salmonid the Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma , a phenomenon well known in sea‐run and lake‐run populations, is presented. Dolly Varden in the Shiisorapuchi River in central Hokkaido, Japan, used both tributaries, of which there are many, and the main stem, but spawned only in tributaries. The size structures of Dolly Varden (≥age 1 + years) in tributaries were unimodal (<100 mm fork length, L F) during non‐spawning seasons but changed to bimodal during spawning seasons (lower mode <110 mm, upper mode >120 mm L F). Mature individuals were observed in both modal groups. From the trapping and census data, the small group appeared to be tributary resident and the large group main stem migrant. Males were common in both resident and migrant components. Most females, however, migrated to the main stem to mature, indicating female‐biased migration.  相似文献

Three field‐identified whitefish Coregonus lavaretus forms in Lake Muddusjärvi, Finland, were compared in morphology, diet and prey size. First, these forms were studied with univariate and multivariate analysis to assess morphological divergence at a higher resolution level than in the field. Second, stomach contents were analysed to estimate diet‐overlap among forms. Finally, the relationship between prey size and morphology was examined. The whitefish were assigned to the initial field‐classification with 99·2% and 98·8% accuracy for morphologic and meristic traits, respectively. The small sparsely‐rakered form (SSR) had the shortest rakers and largest gillraker space, followed by the large sparsely‐rakered form (LSR) with intermediate gillraker length and gillraker space, while densely‐rakered whitefish (DR) had the longest rakers and smallest gillraker space. The two sparsely‐rakered whitefish forms (LSR and SSR), consumed mainly benthic macroinvertebrates, while densely‐rakered whitefish (DR), utilized pelagic food items. Average diet‐overlaps between whitefish forms were low in June‐September (Schoener's α = 0·02 − 0·23). Gillraker number and length were negatively correlated to prey length in the diet ( r  = −0·73, and r  = −0·60), while gillraker space was positively correlated with prey length ( r  = 0·81). The fact that these whitefish forms were morphologically and ecologically segregated, and that gillraker traits probably have a functional value in food selection, further suggests that natural selection has been important in structuring life‐history trajectories into divergent niche use.  相似文献

Abstract. The larvae of the antlion Euroleon nostras are pit-builders, constructing pitfall traps in loose sand. The number of pits and the pit diameter are recorded when larvae are kept in substrates with different particle sizes. The most convenient pit-building sand fractions are two fractions with fine sand (≤ 0.23 mm; 0.23–0.54 mm). The largest pits are constructed in sand with a particle size of 0.23–0.54 mm. In this sand fraction, larvae of all three instars most readily build pits. No pits are constructed in sand with a particle size greater than 1.54 mm. First- and second-instar larvae avoid building pits in substrates of particle size 1–1.54 mm, but third-instar larvae construct pits in this sand fraction. It is assumed that the antlion is capable of distinguishing between substrate types and this hypothesis is tested by giving larvae the choice of building a pit in one of four particle-size fractions. Larvae of all three instars prefer to build pits in the fraction with a particle size of 0.23–0.54 mm. Only third-instar larvae build pits in all four fractions, but only occasionally in the coarser fraction.  相似文献

1. The cichlid fish Metriaclima zebra , common in Lake Malawi, feeds by filtering plankton from the water and by brushing items from sediment covered substrata. It inhabits isolated rocky reefs among which community structure, resource availability and gene pools are likely to differ. We speculated that body size and trophic morphology of M. zebra might vary concomitantly.
2. We quantified the extent of genetic, body size and trophic variation within and between populations of M. zebra from southern Lake Malawi. Specifically, we tested the hypotheses that: (i) local populations are genetically differentiated, (ii) local populations differ in jaw morphology, dentition and standard length (SL), and (iii) variation in size is correlated with variation in trophic morphology.
3. Local populations of M. zebra differed in mean SL and were genetically differentiated. Moreover, populations exhibited dissimilar oral jaw morphologies and dentitions, perhaps related to differences in feeding biology. Variation in jaw shape was largely restricted to the curvature of the distal tip of the dentary. Populations were characterised by individuals with oblique, upward or downward directed gapes. Dental patterns differed in the proportion of unicuspid teeth in all rows of each jaw (dentaries and premaxillae) and the spacing of teeth in affected rows.
4. Within populations, jaw and tooth shapes were correlated with body size. Smaller individuals possessed upward curving jaws and closely packed multicusped teeth, while larger individuals exhibited relatively downward-directed jaws with increasing numbers of widely spaced unicuspid teeth.
5. Metriaclima zebra populations have increased in mean SL over the last decade, in contrast to a decline among Lake Malawi pelagic cichlids. Differences in size may contribute to variation in trophic morphology and may track local environmental dynamics in this lacustrine system.  相似文献

Insular mammalian populations living in areas of small size are often characterized by a drastic change in body mass compared to related continental populations or species. Generally, small mammals (less than 100 g) evolve into giant forms while large mammals (up to 100 g) evolve into dwarf forms. These changes, coupled with changes in other life, behavioural, physiological or demographic traits are referred to generally as the insular syndrome. We tested in this study the relative contribution of three factors — area of island, numbers of competitor species and number of predator species — to changes in body size of the woodmouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Our results, based on a comparative analysis using the phylogenetic independent contrasts method, indicate that the increase in body size is related both to the decrease of island size and to the lower number of predator species. A decrease of competitor species does not seem to have an important effect.  相似文献

We present evidence that extreme seed size variation in fruits of Crinum erubescens (range: 0.1 to 66.5 g per seed) occurs when mating pairs are inbred, either from selfing or biparental inbreeding. Several relatively uniform seeds of intermediate size are produced when pollen from several pollen donors is applied simultaneously to a flower. Selfed fruits and some fruits pollinated with a single pollen donor produce both large and small seeds, although selfed fruits produce fewer seeds than outcrossed fruit. These results are contrary to the hypothesis that variation in seed size is attributable to either pollen competition or differential allocation of maternal resource to seeds of different genotypes.  相似文献

The spawning period of the common goby Pomatoschistus microps from 1993 to 1997 in the Vaccarès lagoon did not vary, except in 1997 when it was longer due to the reproduction of the young-of-the-year. Egg size and number, and reproductive allocation varied greatly with one year to another. Female common gobies increased both their fecundity per spawning act and their egg size from 1993 to 1995. The annual variation in the reproductive effort suggests a high phenotypic plasticity of reproductive traits in P. microps , in the face of environmental perturbations. In winter 1993–1994, a centennial flood of the Rhône River caused major hydrological changes in the lagoon in less than 1 week, affecting many invertebrates and fish for several years. The reproductive investment of the common goby increased, possibly as a consequence of those environmental changes.  相似文献

Populations ol three species of land snail, Helicella itala. Candidula intersecta and Cochlicella acuta are studied on sand dunes on Coll in the Inner Hebrides.
Population density and mean shell size were estimated on 18 sample sites. The sites were ranked for six environmental factors. Environmental factors which are related to the dune vegetational succession account for much of the variation in the densities of C. intersecta and C. acuta . The density of H. itala , however, shows no strong association with these factors. Both snail density and shell size are reactively independent of total soil calcium levels. For each of the three species, mean shell size is negatively associated with population density; the environmental factors account for little of the variation in shell size.
Four possible mechanisms are suggested to account for the variation of shell size with density. It is argued that a direct influence of density on shell size, possibly mediated by mucus conditioning of the environment is the most probable mechanism. There is some evidence to suggest an inter-specific effect whereby C. intersecta density affects H. itala shell size.  相似文献
